Objetivo: Development of new technology and new methods for applications primarily in cellbiology. We have choosen to study the energy supply in cells as an application for our new technologies. In the doctoral project, mitochondria in cultured cells and tissue will be studied. We want to explore some basic questions about the dynamics of mitochondria in relation to the cell’s energy needs, both over time and space. For those studies we need to develop both ultra-sensitive measurement technology and new methods to support studies of fine details and processes in living cells.

Objetivo: To develop photonic integrated circuits for methane sensing, operating at mid-infrared wavelengths where the gas strongly absorbs light. Objetivo: This project will exploit computer simulations to investigate the dynamics of the generation of light in such large, few-moded or multimoded, optical fibres. We will study the interaction between the laser gain medium and the spatial distribution of the laser light, the instabilities caused by optical nonlinearities, temperature and acoustic fluctuations, and the influence of chromatic dispersion on these processes.

Objetivo: Using state-of-the-art physical machining techniques, high voltage, lasers, and optics our research aims to develop nonlinear optical waveguides for use in quantum science, ultrashort pulse physics, bio-detection, lithography and material processing. Building on world-record results for periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides, and several products released via our spin-out company Covesion Ltd, this project combines novel fabrication approaches with well-developed commercial materials to expand the field of engineered nonlinear optics deep into the ultra-violet.
